This was a HOT Saturday night show, hotter than usual. Not only were we at capacity by 8pm, but poetry royalty was in the house - our feature, Toronto poet laureate George Elliott Clarke!
His presence attracted other poetry icons in our scene, from Andrea Thompson to Lara Bozabalian. We were also treated to a fantastic open mic, opened by St. Catherine Slam's Thomas Hoad.
The slam had a heady mix of vets and young pros, such as Stephen Robins (formerly of BAM! Slam Team) and Millado (current coach of BAM! Youth Slam Team).
Toronto's new poet laureate, the wonderful George Elliott Clarke, is making his first public appearance since being appointed the role at our next Slam, on SATURDAY JAN 26 at the Drake Hotel (1150 Queen St. W.)
His 25-minute set will be in the middle of the spoken word competition. Doors at 7, show at 8. $5 all night.
Hosted by Dave Silverberg.

If you missed TPS on Jan. 12, you missed a mom rapping with her son, incredible singing on the open mic, an ode to car washes and a tribute piece to Toronto.
The first TPS of '13 got off to a hot start, with a packed open mic, starring Electric Jon with an acapella tune and Jessica Bundy singing sultry verses over her guitar plucking.
You're all in for a treat with our first slam of '13. Head to the Drake Hotel on SATURDAY JANUARY 12 for a hot hot slam featuring Toronto MC Abdominal and his band The Obliques. You haven't heard rap like this ever!

Until then, poetry fans!
A note from TPP artistic director Dave Silverberg:
Another year, another incredible poetry slam season. Everyone at TPP wants to thank you all - poets, fans, fellow organizers - for making this year so inspiring and invigorating. We've enjoyed some memorable features and slam wins, and followed the 2012 TPS Team as they made Finals stage at CFSW '12 for the first time in many years. We're so crazy proud of Britta, Cathy, Tanya and David!
Look for us making big moves in 2013.
The last slam of 2012 was a doozy! We had some out-of-towners stopping by to rip the mic, such as Wes Ryan from Peterborough, and newcomers wowing us with their skills, such as Uvi.
Veteran poets also peppered the lineup, such as David Delisca, Cathy Petch, Iyah, etc., so in the third round we saw David and Wes and Cathy battle it out for that sweet $80. Cathy dropped Alien Children, found on the TPS Finals 2012 CD (wink wink), and took the crown and the cold hard cash. It's her second TPS win of the season!
Our feature was awesome, as expected.
We're back with our final slam of 2012. Stoked to feature Tomy Bewick of Burlington Slam Project, one of the original slam poets who competed at TPS 7 years ago.
TPS goes down SATURDAY DECEMBER 22 @ the Drake Hotel, 1150 Queen St. W.
Doors 7, signup 730pm, show 8
Open mic available too
Hosted by Dave Silverberg
ALSO: We've decided to stay at the Drake Underground after the slam to dance the night away! We don't do this often so bring yo' dancing shoes to the slam so you can hang out with us after!

A gorgeous mix of veterans and newcomers took the stage Sunday night at our second last slam of 2012. The packed audience enjoyed poetry from the likes of IF, Valentino, David Delisca, while relative newbies Sabrina and Will held their own.
A hot hot third round gave us David, IF and Anto Chan, the last a comedian who's been frequently coming out to TPS. His humor won over the judges and he took the top place, while David placed second and IF was third. Lishai, our guest host, did a wonderful job keeping the show smoothly, check out her show Dec.
We're back at the Drake SUNDAY DECEMBER 9 with another fun fun fun spoken word show!
Doors 7, signup 730pm show 8pm.

Featuring the White Noise Machine, former member of Toronto Poetry Slam Team, very talented poet and performer, you're all in for a treat if this is your first Machine experience.

See ya @ the Drake!
Welcome back, Mike Smith aka White Noise Machine!
The former TPS Team member took a two-year hiatus from TPS only to return on Nov. 24 to take the win, on our 7th bday no less.
WNM was up against formidable competition, such as David Delisca (current TPS Team member), Emilee, Iyah, Amy and Banoo. We got a nice range of material, such as WNM telling us about heartbreak and David D. recounting his unfortunate Toronto Police encounter.
