May Slam/First Qualifier Roundup

Read or join the discussion on this post.

Global domination continues right on schedule, with a large and loving crowd lapping it up at the ElMo’s shwanky digs. Owing to overwhelming demand, a staggering 18 poets were out of the gates for the first round, and the audience was treated to everything from comedic monologue to social commentary to rap rhymes to what came close to human sampling (thanks to the inimitable Electric Jon).

Competition was tight, with more than one slam regular (and a couple of slam stage virgins) racking up points that will certainly help them in their aim of making one of the two Toronto slam teams. The end of the second round saw a tie for third between slam standard Gypsy Eyes Spencer and newbie Charles, joining Nigel Wolf, Amanda Hiebert and Spencer Gypsy Eyes to set a tough standard in the supreme spout-off. But there can be only one, and Spencer once again knocked the competition cold perpendicular and took home 75 in salad, making him a three-time winner.

Yes, things continue to heat up, wordlovers. We’ll have photos (professional, no less!) up soon, and since this last and the next two slams are counting toward Toronto slam team rankings, we’ll post the scores as well. ‘Til then, then.

    Dear Webmaster,

As the unoffical score keeper I have to note a slight confusion in your roundup. It was the second round tie (6. Nigel Wolf 26.5, 5. Matthew Glick 26.7, 3. Spencer 27.0, 3. Charles 27.0, 2. Amanda 27.2 & 1. gypsy eyes 27.3) that lead to 4 poets being involved in the third round. Then in the 3rd round Spencer crushed his competion and won by 0.8… and no one has won a Slam by that big of a margin since Mike Smith won by 2.1 in Feb at the Victory cafe.

gypsy eyes, you are, as you know, right on two counts: you actually did take first place in the second round; and that handsome devil Mike Smith did indeed win by an impressive margin in February. Your double-threat skillset of statistician and slam historian is duly noted with respect, and slight fear.

Thanks for posting our first comment!

Gypsy, thanks for pointing that out. Webmaster, many thanks for making the corrections. Everyone who attended May’s slam, thank you from the bottom of my feet soles.
