May 26 slam wrap-up

Three women in the final round? Let's be real, no jokesies, we haven't had an all-female final round in a long time, and how appropriate for it to befall on our annual tradition, the Anything Goes Slam.

In an event where poets are encouraged to break the rules and use props and wear costumes and play instruments...the 12 poets took full advantage. We saw dancing to Shane Koyczan poems (Emilee), folk band backing jazzy verse (Robert Menzies), a collage of Natalie Portman photos timed to an ode to the actor (Dave Silverberg), a male poet dressed half in drag, doing a piece about a relationship (Rollyn Stone) and much much more. The first round was dizzying, but we noticed a trend: the women were getting lotsa love from the judges, especially when the poetry went funny like with Cathy Petch's orange-intercourse piece, this time complete with a homemade strap-on.

Secound round gave us Emilee covering Anything Goes the song, Tanya giving us a taste of Climing Poetree in NYC, Dave doing some Mad Libs with the crowd, Jenni covering her fave poet, and Rollyn deciding to do some strippin on stage, flaunting some pretty impressive abs.

Third round was a firestorm of fun, with Tanya, Emilee and Cathy all bringing something flavorful to the stage. The crowd got a real kick out of Cathy's saw, her instrument of the night. We'd never look at Puccini the same (had to be there).

When it was all said and done, Emilee won the Anything Goes Slam (her fist win!), Tanya second and Cathy third. Our guest host Livingston rocked the stage so amazingly, we'll definitely have her back to guest host again. And our feature Sara Hennessey might've been the best comedy feature we ever booked, she was truly hurt-your-ribs funny. Find her and give her a high five!

See you at our next slam June 10, Drake Hotel, our annual Story Slam! Chris Masson from Montreal is featuring. Same bat time.
