Toronto Poetry Slam recap, July 28

Those of you who came to the July 28 were in for a treat. Not only was the slam list packed with some mighty veterans, but we also were delighted to finally feature Mary Pinkoski from the championship Edmonton slam team!

First the open mic. Packed with 7 hungry poets and comedians and musicians, and a special shoutout to Dreadeye for his kickass music, Rich Lett for an impressive homage to legends of the word, and Mona aka Sacrifice for a birthday poem complete with djembe accompaniment.

Then the slam began and what a first round it was. David Delisca told us why he doesn't drink anymore, Emilee threw in some Sondheim in her piece, Serafina told us about painful heartbreak, Britta went sexy and Electric Jon rocked our faces with his I'm Due classic.

Second round gave us Jay with an ode to slam, Serafina explained what her future husband should expect, EJ went with his battle piece, Emilee dropped her Beautiful beauty, David did a lil piece about his ever-growing belly and Noah and Britta B showed off their team piece chops with a hot hot poem asterisked with a kiss at the end. A real kiss! A TPS first!

Third round gave us four poets due to a tie and when the dust settled Serafina was victorious, just edging out Britta B and then Emilee and Noah, who went waaaay over time. It was Serafina's first slam victory in Toronto, she announced.

Let's not forget our awesome feature Mary, whose poetry blends crackling honesty and metaphors so sweet your brain can't stop tingling. Her set was poignant and always compelling. And judging by the crowd reaction after her set, got a feeling she made a lot of new fans in TO.

Next up is Aug. 12 at the Drake featuring Andrea Thompson from Toronto, you don't wanna miss this one!
