Sorry for the shouting (all-caps) but wanted to grab your attention, faithful forum readers...
The regular season of qualifying slams at Toronto Poetry Slam begins at the next event, Oct. 27 at the Drake Hotel. Yes, we're starting the season earlier than previous years because it is this slammaster's intention to bring a Toronto team to the U.S. National Poetry Slam. For the first time. Ever.
Since the NPS is in August, and they need to know who's on the team much earlier than August, the TPS season has to begin as soon as possible.
So the TPS season will run from October to February inclusive, with the semi-finals in March and the finals in April.
There will be more information on the rules and scoring system of the TPS season in the coming weeks. But this is a heads up to anyone looking to make the 2008 Toronto Poetry Slam team, that will undoubtedly compete at the Canadian Festival of Spoken Word in October 2008 and most likely the U.S. NPS in August 2008.
Let me know if got any questions.

I'm soooo gonna take a run at NPS!

Will this info be in fliers, and perhaps the first NOW listing?
And will the rules be the same?
Offline
It will be on fliers, for sure, but media listings can't often fit more than 20 words, so not certain I'll be posting that kind of info there. Besides, people who come through NOW or eye listings are generally audience folk as opposed to competitors...most of the time.
The rules won't change much, maybe a small tweak here or there, but nothing macro. If anything.

Ohhhh NPS!! I will be thrilled & filled with pride to cheer Toronto on this year. :D

Hey A-Manual...
Slams are by sign-up on the night of the show. There are almost always more people wanting to slam than there are slots to perform, so you gotta show up a half hour before the show, get your name in the hat, and cross your fingers.
Hope to see you there in October!

check the listings page my friend.

Well, the main page will do, or the "Next Slams" page.
Also check out Up From The Roots' slams... the site is upfromtheroots.ca, I believe, but last time I was there I didn't see any visible links to slam info. It's on that site somewhere though.

Unfortunately the UFTR website isn't always up to date, but if you check the menu in the top right and go to Roots Lounge you can usually find the next open mic event.

I really want to go to the slam in October, and if I'm able to, Faith is under directions to drag me on stage if she has to so I can perform in public for the first time... :S
