Got thinking about a fresh idea for a slam. Also got thinking about basketball, because I love me some Raptors. Wait...why not combine the two?
Here's what I propose: a slam dunk slam. It's a slam mixed with a slam dunk contest.
How does it work? It's a regular slam, with the added slam dunk component. Poet A performs a poem in the first round, gets scored, but ALSO has to perform a custom slam dunk on one of those kid Nerf nets, something any of us can 360 on. Not very high. Thing is, the judges hafta score your dunk too, which you perform right after your poem.
In total, you get a score out of 60 (30 for poem, 30 for dunk). Same rules apply to the dunk scoring, drop highest n' lowest.
If you miss your dunk on the first try, you get a couple more tries. If you can't complete it, you can shoot it from long range to get a 24, if you get it in.
I'm not sure what would be the big finale in the last round, if there should be some dunk-off. That's why I'm just throwing out this idea to you, dear Readers. Now, I know some of you may not be feelin this slam dunk component. But to you I say...just imagine how we can appeal this slam to both the basketball and spoken word audiences out there! Think of the creative dunks people will be crafting! (I have mine worked out).
No joke, I think Toronto is ready for this, obviously on a non-Drake night, we need a safer stage than that. Somewhere flat, a la Tranzac. Could be ideal for spring, when people are starting to play real basketball.
As for a name, Slam Dunk works I think. Maybe Poetry Slam Dunk. Slam Dunk Slam is kinda redundant.

Dave,
Count me in...I mean how could you pass on that...great poetry and herniated groins all on the one stage! Poets, after all, are notorious for their physical prowess.
As for the name, I propose "The James Naismith Memeorial Slam".
Must sign off now, this typing has seriously winded me.
Maybe you could convince Andrea Bargnani to come out and be a judge

i love it Dave. but i say if we're doing go all out. we should all out. it should be in an out-doorish venue where we can have a real hoop. now i know not everyone (including myself) can not dunk on a regulation 10ft rim. so we could have one of those adjustable hoops. they're easy to adjust (takes like 2 seconds) AND you can drop that sucker to where a tiny person could dunk on it. we could weigh down the back portion with sandbags or something to ensure it doesn't tip over. and sure, there will be people who want the nerf, so let's have that on stand-by too (with an automatic -2). i do like the idea. but out-doors would be perfect and having a real rim would make it fantastic. i honestly feel like the nerf net would kill the whole thing.

As much as I like the idea of an all-out outdoor real-net slam, I think for the debut we should go Nerf. Why? We don't want to take it too seriously, and let's be honest, some people will wanna slam and not do the athletic part, so they shouldn't hafta deal with a real basketball and a lowered net.
Also, tough to get outdoor venues/stages, and not sure we can just invade a park. Now, a Nerf net still has a host of issues, like injury liability, so we might hafta see about that.
And as for a ringer or celeb judge...I've been thinkin about it. Got a few ideas. I'll see if I can work my magic once we decide on a date/venue
